Under most circumstances, blepharoplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia, but may also be performed under twilight sedation or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s preference. Dr. Frankel uses a variety of techniques — especially for the lower eyelids, depending on the patient’s anatomy and tissue characteristics — to achieve the best result for the individual patient. The procedure time for blepharoplasty averages between 1-2 hours.

Recovery

Most patients can go home after their eyelid surgery, and many are frequently surprised with how little pain they have during recovery. Pain is minimal, with only mild discomfort from swelling and bruising.

Generally speaking, patients return to work within a week and are able to perform normal activities after about 10 days. There may be some bruising around the eye area, but it can be easily camouflaged with makeup.

If a certain technique of lower blepharoplasty is used (fat transposition), patients are seen 3-5 days after surgery for removal of a small bolster which is hidden by surgical tape. All patients are seen 6-7 days after surgery, at which time any remaining skin sutures are removed. Patients are then seen one month after surgery, three months after surgery, and six months after surgery. Results are typically final at around six months.
